Kefalonia Island Tour

The island tour of Kefalonia begins once we leave the town of Argostoli and head off to St. George’s castle. Sitting proudly high on a hill the castle offers commanding views from all around.
The castle is on a hill 7 km from Argostoli and dominates the south part of island of Cephalonia and the bay of Argostoli. The building of the castle started by the Byzantines and it was completed by the Venetians. It was the administrative center of the island until the 18th century, when the capital was moved to Argostoli.
After that we visit the Robolla wine co-operative and then the main monastery of St Gerasimos. This is the island’s patron saint and his relics are kept in the monastery’ s smaller church in a silver sarcophagus which is opened during services for the congregation to kiss his feet .Set in the Omala valley ,known for its robola vineyards,the monastery is the island’s largest and more majestic ,with a splendid bell-tower build in the architectural style peculiar to the Ionian Islands. A small hole in the church floor leads down to an underground chamber where the saint lived as a hermit. As a sign of respect visitors should ensure the wear suitable clothing for visiting the church – a sarong is deal to cover up arms and legs.
Next, it’s off to the Drogoratti cave for a little exercise and mind-blowing views Nature’s splendor is evident in every centimetre of this unique sculpure of earth and rock. The visitor will be impressed at the very moment that he steps into this laboratory of nature, where stalactites and stalagmites have been taking shape
Then a short bus ride readies us for a gentle stroll down the ramp into the mythical Melissani Lake and cave. Short tour by rowing boat Melissani lake is a wonderful underground lake with sublime stalactites, where some kind of worship of God Pan took place in historical times. When illuminated by the sun’s rays, sublime colors are reflected on the lake water.
Swimming and lunch (optional) in Agia Efimia and after we’ve spent time eating and enjoying the pretty harbor, we drive through to the west coast to the area above Myrtos Bay. The most beautiful beach on the island and one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with snow white sand, a paradise on earth is protected by high rocks while the sea offers sublime combinations with colors ranging from blue green to deep blue.
After that visit Assos peninsula. Assos is built amphitheatrically around the peninsula, which is surrounded by lush areas. The village retains its authentic traditional Ionian architecture and rich greenery of tall pines and cypress trees meets the blue waters of the Ionian sea, composing an idyllic landscape that only nature could create.
The island tour of Kefalonia will be completed by a quick journey whilst viewing the Lixouri peninsula finds us back in Argostoli where our day began.
